Reckless govt driver kills four-year-old girl

A driver with the Ondo State Government identified simply as Abiodun, had allegedly killed a four-year-old girl with an official vehicle at Igboniki Street, Akure. on Sunday evening

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred after Abiodun, who was attached to the Accountant Office in the Ministry of Health, left a drinking joint on Igboniki Street on Sunday.

The eyewitness said, “As he was making a U-turn, he lost control of the Hilux van with registration number, OD 259-A08, and hit two children who were playing in front of their house.

“One of the two girls, Precious Oluwatoba, died instantly, while the second girl was seriously injured and had been admitted to the hospital.”

Our correspondent learnt that residents of the area rushed to the scene and started beating the driver immediately the incident happened.

He was, however, rescued by a team of policemen.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr Wole Ogodo, confirmed the incident and added that the driver had been arrested and detained at the ‘B’ Division Police Station.

The PPRO said, “The suspect had been arrested. One of the victims died, while the other is receiving treatment at the hospital. Investigation is ongoing.”

Meanwhile, the father of the deceased, Mr Olaniyan Oluwatoba, has appealed to the state government to investigate the accident and make sure that justice prevail.

He said, “I am begging the government to intervene in this matter, I wondered why a drunk would be allowed to be driving an official vehicle of the state government.”
