Nigeria: 900 Corps Members Seek Redeployment From Kano

With the resurgence of terrorism in Kano, the place is no longer safe for many of its residents, especially those whose stay in the hitherto bubbling commercial nerve centre of the north has been due to exigencies.

Love your laptops just same way you love your lover

I insisted on lover because there is no way you can marry who you don't love.Handle and taking care of laptops is easy and simple but many owners still find it difficult to practices.
Taking care of your laptop is one of the most important things you should know. You would want to take advantage of its full life, don’t you? It might have cost you quite a bit out of your pocket so it is just proper that you’d do everything to take care of it and maintain its good health. Here’s what every laptop owners should do to protect and extend its life.
1. Do not eat and drink while you’re in front of your laptop. Spilled liquids and fallen food crumbs and bits can easily damage the sensitive circuitry inside.
2. Do not touch the LCD screen. Close the lid gently by holding it with both hands when shutting it off. This is to avoid breaking it. It is also important to clean your monitor with approved cleaning materials only. Screen repairs don't come in real cheap so you may want to make sure the monitor is taken cared of properly.
3. Keep its temperature cooler by installing a laptop cooler or chill mat to reduce its operating temperature.
4. A laptop’s battery is like human muscles – if you don’t exercise it, it’d become useless. Use your laptop's battery until it tells you to recharge. At least once a week unplug it from the wall and let it run on battery power. This will make the battery life lasts much longer.
5. Do not let it run for straight two days, even on powerful laptops. Laptops can get very hot and leaving it on for a longer period of time may cause overheating. It is advisable to install software that automatically puts your laptop in a sleep or hibernate mode or even shut it down after a period of inactivity.

Using data collected as part of the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases Study, the researchers linked intake of sugar-sweetened beverages to 133,000 diabetes deaths, 44,000 deaths from cardiovascular diseases and 6,000 cancer deaths. Boko Haram have limited knowledge of Islam – Soyinka

PORT HARCOURT: NOBLE laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has lashed at members of Boko Haram, saying they have limited knowledge of Islamic religion.

Speaking Monady in Port Harcourt at the opening of this year’s Rivers state education summit, organised by the state government Professor Soyinka said poor knowledge of the Koran was largely responsible for why Boko Haram should despise western education.

According to him some of the greatest philosophers in history were Muslims, adding that there was need for members of Boko Haram to be retrained on the content of the religion.

“Boko Haram are not educated enough about their religion to know that some of the greatest philosophers came from the religion. They have been taught one track line (Monorail) about the religion. They need to be re educated about the religion”, he said.

Soyinka who was Chairman of the opening session said government should take urgent steps to redress the decay in the nation’s university system, stressing that he was happy to be invited to the summit to be part of a move to rebuild the educational system.

Professor Emeritus, Ayo Banjo who gave the key note address called for steps to improve on the quality of education at the primary level, stressing that it was the foundation of the educational system.

He traced the high percentage failure recorded in the past at the West Africa School Certificate Examination to a weak foundation at the primary level, adding also that the shaky foundation was also behind poor quality graduates being shunned out by universities in the country.

Professor Banjo further called for a total overhaul of the educational system from the secondary to tertiary level to achieve the best for the nation.

Earlier in his welcome address, governor Chibuike Amaechi said the government was set to engage thirteen thousand teachers to provide the needed manpower to achieve quality education in the state.

He said the newly built modern schools would be managed by private hands for the state. The governor who spoke extensively on some of the challenges militating against quality education in the state said his government had to institute a Quality Assurance Board to check the problems.

HTC releases new phone

TAIPEI—HTC Corporation said on Sunday that it would roll out its new flagship handset HTC One in the United Kingdom, Germany and Taiwan this week after the Taiwanese smartphone maker delayed the inauguration earlier this month due in part to a shortage of several key components, The Wall Street Journal reported.
“We appreciate our customers’ patience and believe that once they have the phone in their hands, they will agree that it has been worth the wait,” the company said in a statement.
The HTC One is widely regarded as the company’s last attempt to regain market share in the competitive smartphone market. But the delay means it will face more competition from Samsung Electronics Co.’s latest Galaxy S4 smartphone, which the South Korean company unveiled earlier this month and is set to hit the market in April.
The HTC One will also roll out across Europe, North America and most of the Asia-Pacific before the end of April, HTC said in the statement.
The statement on new launch schedule comes after The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing several retail distributors and telecom operators, including Vodafone Group PLC, that HTC had notified them of shipment delays of the new smartphone.

Intel was 20 years on the 22nd Of March 2013

Intel’s infamous Pentium processor got its start 20 years ago today with the release of the Pentium 60 CPU. That chip utilized Intel’s 5-volt Socket 4, was build on an 800-nanometer process and carried 3.1 million transistors. For comparison, today’s third generation Ivy Bridge processors use a 22-nanometer process and contain 1.4 billion transistors.

As ExtremeTech notes, early Pentium processors weren’t anything special. In fact, the first generation was barely faster than the 486DX chips they replaced. It wasn’t until the Pentium 3 came along that Intel really started to find traction with the platform, outpacing competing chips from AMD and Cyrix with ease.

Pentium 4, however, was regarded as a step back in the eyes of many. The architecture was designed to run at very high clock speeds (which it did) but at the expense of real-world performance. These chips also ran extremely hot, meaning they required a large heatsink and noisy cooling fan to keep under control. The misstep ultimately allowed AMD to take the performance crown with their highly successful Athlon line for several years.

Intel eventually found their way again with the Core architecture that debuted near the end of 2007. Interestingly enough, this platform was based on the same P6 architecture used in the first Pentium Pro back in 1995. The rest is pretty much history as Intel has had tremendous success with more recent platforms like Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge. With Haswell in sight and AMD hardly visible in the rear-view mirror, Intel appears set to carry on without much major competition for the foreseeable future.

Gunmen kill 25, free 120 inmates in Adamawa

Suspected Islamist gunmen have launched a series of gun and bomb attacks in a remote town along Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, killing at least 25 people, and freed 120 prison inmates, police have said.

The gunmen carried out four simultaneous assaults on Ganye in Adamawa State on Friday, opening fire on a bar, a bank, a prisoner warder and separately attacking a prison, Mohammed Ibrahim, police spokesman for Adamawa police command said.

“Twenty-five people were killed in four different simultaneous attacks by gunmen in Ganye,” he said.

Members of insurgent group Boko Haram were the prime suspects, he said. Violence by Islamist insurgents in northern Nigeria is on the rise again after a brief lull.

Three bombs exploded in Kano on Saturday, Kano State police spokesman, Magaji Majiya, said by telephone.

One of the bombings was a suicide attack, but did not claim any lives apart from those of the bombers.

However, a remote control bomb targeting a joint military and police checkpoint wounded several police, he said.

A separate gun attack in Dakata  killed one person on Saturday, he said.

Majiya said four people had been arrested in connection with the attacks.

Touching Story, it shall not be your portion

At Emmanuel Adesanya Street, downtown Ikorodu in Lagos State where she resides, there is hardly anyone who does not know Taiwo Fakiyesi, aka Mama Maria. She became very popular among residents as the owner of the only well-stocked grocery store around the area.

But two Saturdays ago, almost everyone in the neighbourhood shed tears for the ailing 47-year-old mother of three as she was struck with yet another tragedy.

She lost her husband who had been helping her contend with kidney disease.

Last October, following an excruciating stomach upset, tests revealed that her two kidneys had packed up. And since then, she has been undergoing dialysis twice a week.

Billy Ray Harris, Homeless Man, Reunites With Family After Returning Diamond Ring

An honest gesture has brought more riches to a Missouri homeless man's life than he could ever have imagined.

According to reports, Billy Ray Harris -- the panhandler who made headlines last month for returning a woman's engagement ring after she dropped it by accident into his change cup -- has not only been heaped with well-wishes and donations from supporters around the country, but he has also reunited with his long-estranged family.

Pope urges dialogue with Islam

Pope Francis urged the West on Friday to intensify dialogue with Islam and appealed to the world to do more to combat poverty.

The new pontiff made his appeal in an address to diplomats accredited to the Vatican, sending a message through them to the leaders of the more than 170 countries with which the Vatican has diplomatic relations.

Speaking in Italian, he also made another impassioned appeal for the defense of the poor and of the environment, saying richer countries should fight what he called "the spiritual poverty of our times" by re-forging links with God.

Nigeria the second fastest market for Champagne

Nigeria spends an average of N41.41 billion on champagne yearly, according to a report by Euromonitor International.

The report indicates that Nigeria is the second fastest growing market in the world for champagne, noting that between 2006 and 2011, it achieved a compound annual growth of 22 percent.

Total champagne consumption reached 752,879 bottles (75cl) in 2011, higher than consumption in Russia and Mexico; therefore, placing Nigeria among the top 20 champagne markets in the world.

In 2010, Nigeria consumed about 593,000 bottles, the highest consumption in Africa. The closest to this figure was South Africa, another country that has been identified as an emerging market for luxury goods, in addition to Nigeria. South Africa’s champagne consumption was 384,000 bottles in 2010.

“Nigerian champagne consumption is quite big,’’ says Charles Armand de Belenet, global marketing and communications director, at Pernod’s GH Mumm and Perrier Jouet Champagne brands, saying “we are building our network here and it is one of the most attractive places for us at the moment.”

It took the European markets by surprise that Nigeria could rank that high in global champagne consumption. Looking at the list of the markets expected to post the strongest gains in total champagne volumes over 2011-2016, France tops the list followed by United Kingdom. Brazil and China are not missing out so are the United States and the upbeat Australian market.

“However, what did come as a surprise was Nigeria’s second place in these global rankings,” says Spiros Malandrakis, senior alcoholic drinks analyst at Euromonitor International, in a keynote presentation at the 2012 Champagne Assembly held in London.

“And the audience’s disbelief was palpable. No-one challenged the data directly and yet many seemed to politely take it with a grain of salt - if only in the light of the dominant, overoptimistic analytical perspective that sees the European debt-crisis saga coming to a happy ending by the end of 2012. Why bother with Nigeria anyway if Europe was about to start popping bottles again in the immediate future?” he says.

Be that as it may, Nigeria’s place in the global consumer market for champagne may have come to stay. The Rose varietals and vintage have been in demand in Nigeria, hence, analysts believe this will increasingly inform the industry direction in 2013.

A visit to the Tiamiyu Savage office of Ekulo Wine World shows that a bottle of Rose champagne is sold for N77, 000, while Demi-set brand is N55, 000 per bottle. Krug and Crystal brands fall among the most expensive, with a bottle going for N165, 000 and N275, 000, respectively.

It is not only European wine producers that are looking into the Nigerian market, distillers from South Africa are also catching in. Wines of South Africa (WOSA), an association of South Africa’s wine exporters, has also seen Nigeria as a promising market.

NCC finds #90 Million MTN for poor service

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has imposed a N90 million fine on one of the major telecommunication provider, the Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) for poor service delivery in the month of December last year.

The sanction against MTN came just as NCC Friday rolled out plans to commence implementation of new regulatory framework on mobile number portability for the telecommunication sector in April.

Mobile number portability (MNP) will enable mobile telephone users to retain their mobile telephone numbers when changing from one mobile network operator to another.Migrating from one mobile network operator to
another.

If I was given the opportunity to find them, I will be strict, by imposing #90 million every month once poor service is observed. This sequel to millions of Nigerians out there that do not get values for their monies. Where I live, you have to climb a mast to get a clearer reception. Unnecessary deduction and charges when you did not enjoy the service. I still find it difficult to get an answer on why foreigners are fond of cheating us in our own fatherland.

Igbo Angry With Kano Government

The Igbo in Kano say they have lost confidence in the way Kano State government is handling last Monday’s bombing of luxury buses at New Road Luxury Park, in which more than 80 people lost their lives.
They called on President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to immediately set up a high-powered presidential committee to look into the attack.
President of Ohamaeze Ndigbo, the Igbo apex socio-cultural group in Kano, Chief Tobias Michael Idika, told P.M.NEWS Thursday that 20 of those injured in the explosion have died, bringing the death toll to over 80.
“As I am speaking to you now, we have records of about 20 of the injured victims who have just died. This is to tell you that the death toll is rising on a daily basis. For the ones we know, over 80 of our people have died in this attack, and many are in critical condition.
“I still want to use this opportunity to call on the Kano State government and security agencies to stop the idea of mass burial. In Igbo land, we have a sacred culture. Our people are not buried in foreign lands. They should allow us to identify the dead bodies of our people so that we can take them home for proper burial rites.
“They may be victims of a people who never liked them; but to us, they are our heroes. Ohanaeze will not tolerate the burial of any Igbo son or daughter that died in this circumstance in such a humiliating manner called mass burial. We have a culture of honouring the dead, so the Kano State government should give us such opportunity to properly identify our brothers and sisters who were killed and convey them home,” Idika stated.
Meahwhile, economic activities remained at the lowest ebb, particularly within the Sabon Gari axis Thursday following Monday’s bomb blast.
P.M.NEWS reports that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, is being expected in Kano as at the time of filing this report.

How to deal with depression

Depression drains your energy, hope, and drive, making it difficult to do what you need to feel better. But while overcoming depression isn’t quick or easy, it’s far from impossible. Try these tips:

•Turn to trusted friends and family members. Share what you’re going through with the people you love and trust. Ask for the help and support you need.

•Try to keep up with social activities, even if you don’t feel like it. Often, when you’re depressed, it feels more comfortable to retreat into your shell, but being around other people will make you feel less depressed.

In 1998, the General Assembly gave UNODC the mandate to publish "comprehensive and balanced information about the world drug problem" in recognition of the importance of factual and objective information in international drug control.
Created in 1999, the publication Global Illicit Drug Trends provided comprehensive facts and figures on the situation with respect to the supply of and demand for illicit drugs. Based on data and estimates collected or prepared by Governments, UNODC and other international institutions, UNODC attempts to identify trends in the evolution of global illicit drug markets.
In 2004, UNODC merged Global Illicit Drug Trends and the World Drug Report. With increased statistical and analytical content, the new World Drug Report provides every year one of the most complete pictures of the international drug problem.

Good luck, Mr. Jonathan. It's time you were impeached.

Just outside President Goodluck Jonathan's office sat 17 ambulances, just in case he or one of his aides fell ill. They were seldom if ever used.

No actual health care facility nationwide had as many, and in fact a few still have none at all. But as soon as a Nigerian newspaper took a photo of the ambulances and published a story about them, they suddenly disappeared ― probably to an underground garage.

Man rapes daughter, granddaughter

Holy Jesus! This is the worst abomination I have ever heard in my life. What is wrong with some men, can't they just control themselves for seconds? God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of the magnitude of the sin they committed which is not half of Nigerians. It is a sign of the end-time indeed.

Triplets After 25yrs of Marriage.............please share this

Is there anything too hard for God to do?I have heard and seen so many families, homes and marriage break simply because of inability to give birth to a child after two years. Our God who never sleep nor slumber had done it again.

It was a joyful occasion for the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State as Soji Oni, a Provincial Pastor, dedicated a set of triplets after twenty five years of childlessness with his wife.

The triplets, named Miracle, Sign and Wonder, were dedicated to God at the King’s Place Parish, Port Harcourt, headquarters of Rivers Province 2 of the RCCG.

An overwhelmed Oni told a cheering congregation that it takes a man with heart and foundation built on God to patiently wait twenty five years for the fruit of the womb.

Differentiating iPhones from other smart phones

Differentiating iPhones from other smart phones

MARCH 20, 2013 BY AGENCY REPORTER LEAVE A COMMENT
When cell phones first hit the public market, they were designed specifically to make phone calls and didn’t include much in the way of extra features. However, within the last century, cell phone technology has improved immensely and cell phones are typically used for much more than making a call. Phones that offer a wide variety of features are called smart phones. The iPhone by Apple is a type of smart phone but has features that distinguish it from a standard smart phone.

Software

Currently the iPhone does not allow the use of any third-party software. All iPhone compatible software must either by released or approved by Apple in order to work on the iPhone. Other smart phones allow the user to use third-party programs and are a little more flexible in this area.

Interface

The iPhone uses a touch-screen interface that was unique upon its release. Other smart phone manufacturers have since added similar interfaces to their phones, but the iPhone is still the most common. Other smart phones offer non-touch screen interfaces for users who prefer keypad or button navigation.

Company

The iPhone is offered exclusively through Apple. Other smart phones can be purchased from a variety of companies, such as BlackBerry, Motorola or Nokia. The cell phone services that support the iPhone are also limited to Verizon or AT&T, whereas there are other smart phones that can be found for virtually any network.

App Access

Applications for smart phones and iPhones are referred to simply as “apps.” The iPhone currently has the largest and most diverse app store available. The app market for other smart phone brands is growing and has the advantage of being open to third-party developers.

1,000 youths trained in ICT, garment making

Some 1,000 youths in Abia State have been trained in garment manufacturing and Information and Communication Technology skills by the Industrial Training Fund and the National Industrial Skills Development Programme.

The ITF Director-General, Prof. Longmas Wapmuk, said this on Tuesday in Aba at the graduation ceremony for the participants.

He said the programme had demonstrated a renewed commitment by the Federal Government to empowering youths.

He said  youth empowerment guaranteed speedy attainment of Nigeria’s quest to become one of the 20 most industrialised nations by 2020.

Wapmuk was represented by the Chairman of South-East, South-South Area Managers’ Forum, Mr. Ben Ngwu.

He said the training and other youth empowerment programmes like “You Win’’ and “SURE-P’’ demonstrated government’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s economy.

He expressed hope that youth unemployment would drastically drop in 2015 from the present 20 million as was reported by the National Bureau of Statistics.

In his remarks, Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia State called for an end to lip service on technical and vocational skills acquisition in the country.

Represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Akujuobi Nkoro, the governor said it was wrong for an agrarian economy to pay lip service to technical and vocational skills acquisition.

“The Asian Tigers, Japan, India and others would not have been where they are today if they had failed to place acquisition of skills on the front burner of their national development plans,’’ he said.

He called on stakeholders to join hands to ensure that trained graduates were gainfully-employed or assisted to set up their own businesses through the provision of loan facilities.

Cheap wooden boat killed 166 People On-Board Sinks At Oron In Cross River

CALABAR, Nigeria | Tue Mar 19, 2013 2:58pm EDT
(Reuters) - A wooden boat carrying 166 people from southeastern Nigeria capsized about 40 nautical miles off the coast, with only two known survivors, emergency services and local traders said on Tuesday.

The boat left on Friday from the remote town of Oron, in Cross Rivers state, across the Gulf of Guinea and was heading to Gabon, in central Africa, traders said.

David Akate, head of Cross Rivers emergency services, confirmed the incident but said he had no death toll yet.

He added that the two known survivors were a young boy and a woman who had clung to a gas cylinder and were rescued by fishermen.

"They are mostly Igbo traders from the southeast who headed to Oron to board the wooden boat because it was cheaper," said Ikechukwu Egwu, a marine transporter in the area.

Boat accidents are relatively common in Africa, where safety standards are poor. As many as 138 people died when an overloaded boat carrying passengers and goods capsized in rough water on a river in Democratic Republic of Congo in 2010.

Some 35 people taking this route from Nigeria to Gabon died after their boat sunk off the coast of Cameroon in 2008.

This is why Education sector retrogressive in Nigeria

I saw this picture, tears fell out from my eye. Lot of monies coming from world bank and other umbrella bodies to support and improve our educational system but our corrupt leaders stop the poor masses to benefit from the intervention simply because of selfishness.

Cheating Couple Caught Red-Handed, Forced To Walk Stark Naked As Neighbours Watch

Pandemonium reigned supreme in Entumbane suburb in Bulawayo Zimbabwe when a middle aged woman was forced to parade naked on the orders of her husband who reportedly caught her red-handed allegedly playing the feel good hormone pumping game with her married boyfriend.
The theatre of the scandalous game, which happened on Tuesday last week, was the couple's matrimonial bedroom.
The busting came after neighbours who grew suspicious of the man, Daiton Ndlovu's regular visits to the couple's place during the absence of her husband only identified as Undertaker, tipped off the later who swiftly reacted on the day in question. The married Daiton is reportedly staying close to his rival's house.
The heart-broken Undertaker, after calling his wife's aunt to witness the incident, is alleged to have ordered the two to walk out of the bedroom stark naked if they wanted to be spared a thorough hiding and they complied. The pair, who quickly pleaded guilty remained rooted to the ground , while profusely pleading for forgiveness but the inconsolable Undertaker reportedly could have none of it. He pushed them out of his bedroom.
So embarrassing was the incident that the woman, Sikhonzile Ndlovu, was forced to walk nude alongside her boyfriend who was also in his birthday suit on the dusty roads of the suburb.
Residents, who responded from all directions of the suburb to witness the abomination, were gleefully making rude gestures and shouting obscenities at the disgraced lovebirds.
Among the mob of excited residents who were following the drama, was Daiton's wife and his in-laws and the cheating man's wife is alleged to have fainted upon discovering that her husband was one of the characters in the live sex play.
In a video footage shown to our News Crew, some of the residents, especially children, appeared whistling and poking the cheating lovebirds with sticks when they stopped walking with the shamed woman vainly trying to cover her 'pot of honey' with hands.

The death toll arising from a series of blasts targeting buses full of passengers in Nigeria’s second largest city of Kano, on Monday  has risen.
Kano State Police Command spokesman Magaji Majia confirmed this to AFP.
According to him, “from our tally, 22 people were killed in the suicide blast at the New Road motor park.
“Sixty-five others were injured. Two suicide bombers rammed their Volkwagen Golf car into a luxury bus loaded with passengers about to leave for the south. This led to an explosion that engulfed the bus and four other buses lined up waiting for passengers.”

AIDS alarm: 6,700 South African soldiers have it

The South African army Tuesday said 8.5 percent of the country’s 79,200 soldiers have HIV/AIDS, angrily dismissing claims of a higher prevalence rate. Statistically, this translates to 6,700 soldiers.
The surgeon general of the South African National Defence Force, Vejay Ramlakan said a study conducted in 2012 “showed a prevalence rate of 8.5 percent compared to the national prevalence rate of about 19 percent”.
“This is in stark contrast to claims by some academics the last few years that the HIV and AIDS infection rate among soldiers is as high as 28 percent,” said a statement.
South Africa has no law barring infected people from serving in the army, in a country where some six million people are living with the HIV virus.
As many as 1.7 million people are on the state-funded anti-retroviral programme, the largest in the world.

Dress Code: Why Corps Member Was Decamped

Authorities of Nigeria’s  National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Sunday defended their action on the de-camping of one Miss Tolulope Ekundayo, a corps member who allegedly refused to wear trouser at the Sagamu Orientation Camp in Ogun.
Ekundayo, a 2013 Batch ‘A’ corps member posted to Ogun was de-camped on March 8, following disagreement between her and the authorities over her refusal to comply with camp dress code.
Ekundayo had insisted that wearing trouser negated her Christian faith and opted to wear skirt, instead of trouser.
The NYSC Director in Ogun, Mrs Theresa Anosike, who addressed newsmen in Sagamu on the matter, argued that Ekudayo’s actions contravened the rules and bye-laws of the the NYSC.

I heard three pastor were Arraigned Over N7.9m Fraud

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today arraigned three pastors; David Eshiet, Samson Ugbara and Adesanmi Aderoju before an Ikeja High Court over an alleged N7.9 million fraud.
The defendants were charged by the EFCC alongside their company, Prince and Zion International Service Ltd.
They are facing a six-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and uttering.
EFCC counsel, Mr Ben Ubi alleged that the defendant had conspired to fraudulently obtain the sums of N4 million and 25,000 US dollars (N3.9 million) from Angel Estate Residents Development Association in Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos.
Ubi alleged that the money was obtained on Oct.27, 2011 under the pretext of helping the complainants source for a 100 million US dollars loan facility.
He said the loan was being sourced by the association to finance some community projects, adding that the defendants had obtained the money as processing charges.
The prosecutor further accused the defendants of forging various documents which were used in facilitating the fraud.
He said after collecting the money, the defendants failed to secure the loan as promised which led the complainants to petition the EFCC.
Ubi said their alleged offences contravened Sections 1, (sub-sections 1,2,3) and 8 of the Advanced Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
The defendants all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

US is disappointed but individual attitude can change the situation

The United States of America may cut aid to Nigeria following the presidential pardon granted a former governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and seven others.

Nigeria is one of the biggest recipients of US aid in Africa. Last year the US gave Nigeria about $226m in development aid and is expected to spend $600m this year.

Alamieyeseigha was found guilty and convicted of corruption before he was pardoned on Tuesday by the National Council of State after a meeting in Abuja.

The US stated that it was disappointed that those convicted of corruption could be pardoned by the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

It said the move was a setback for Nigeria’s anti corruption crusade.

A US newspaper, The Hill, quoted the State Department spokeswoman, Victoria Nuland as saying, “The United States government is deeply disappointed over the recent pardons of corrupt officials by the Nigerian government.

“We see this as a setback for the fight against corruption and also for our ability to play the strong role we’ve played in supporting rule of law and legal institution building in Nigeria, which is very important for the future of the country, obviously.”

Asked if the US could cut off aid, Nuland said it was possible, adding that the pardon put a dent on the collaborative efforts between Nigeria and the US in fight against corruption.

N.B: I know it will be very difficult for United States of America to cut aid to Nigeria but the truth is that we have showed  the rest of  the world how corruption has eaten deep to our marrow. This administration has is failing by encouraging corruption. In spite of all these corruption surrounding us like the wall of Jericho, we shouldn't emulate the wrong leaders as an individual and followers but we should all change our attitude and philosophy by taking care of the office the way we take care of our homes, public utilities such as ; toilet, buses, and of course, government’s monies should be spend judicially the way you prudently spend your hard earnings .If we could put this attitude into practice, then, we can be confident soonest Nigeria will be a better place for all us and unborn generation.

Jonathan fires all Nigerian Law School directors

The Nigerian government has fired the director general of the Nigerian Law School, Tahir Mamman, and his six deputies throwing the network of law schools into a mid session crisis.
There is a law school with headquarters in Abuja and campuses  in Lagos, Enugu, Kano, and recently Yenagoa – capital of president Goodluck Jonathan’s home state, Bayelsa – and Yola, capital of Adamawa state.
Deputy directors head the campuses, and although the federal government offered no reasons for the sudden sack coming when the school is in mid session, presidency sources in Abuja said it was based on the recommendation of the Nigeria’s Justice Minister, Mohammed Adoke. President Jonathan approved the sack late Thursday.
Mr. Mamman will keep his post till a replacement is announced for his job and those of his deputies. Unofficial sources in Mr. Adoke’s office said the recommendation was based on claims that Mr. Mamman had spent five years in office.
This story has been updated to reflect the correct term of office for heads of government institutions.
