UEFA is set to probe Manchester United’s proposed £150m deal to sell the naming rights for their training ground to Aon.The US insurance giants already sponsor United’s shirts and are now looking at renaming the Red Devils’ Carrington complex in an eight-year deal which will net the club almost $30m (£19.6m) a year.
But at the Soccerex European Forum, UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino revealed the deal will be scrutinised under Financial Fair Play regulations, and warned that penalties could be faced if rules have been broken.
“All of these questions will have to be analysed,” he told the forum.
“We have some senior judges who are used to taking difficult decisions. The chairman of the investigatory body is a former Belgian prime minister and the chairman of the adjudicatory body has been one of most senior judges of the European Court of Justice until last year they and know what they are doing.”
Infantino added all similar deals will be probed, including Manchester City’s £400m agreement with Etihad Airways to rename their stadium
“They will look at everything at every club,” he added.
“You don’t know how exactly the deals (are done) and if there is something wrong. We have bodies for this. It’s their job, not mine thank God.”
