The news headline “800,000 jostle for
1,500 INEC jobs” sometimes ago, did not come as a surprise to many, as
the unemployed state of many Nigerian graduates is yet another societal
problem. Many a parent, have continued to offer succor to their children
long after they have graduated from school and become old enough to
cater for themselves. The economy has not been favourable, especially to
the graduates who search endlessly for blue collar jobs to no avail.
This problem is a critical one but
should we continue dwelling on its existence? How long do we keep on
blaming the government and the greed of some people for the poor state
of the Nigerian graduate? Shall we allow the “who you know” mentality
deter us from being successful or make us mediocre?
While you answer the above questions
for yourself, it is important to note that being mediocre is by choice, I
don’t care how bad the economy is or how terrible, circumstances are
around you, it is possible to turn your situation around. Gone are the
days when a blue collar job was the best option around, take a look
around you, there must be something your environment lacks that you can
provide, thereby paving the way for yourself to be fulfilled
emotionally, psychologically and financially.
Nothing should deter you from rising
above the challenges posed by some factors in our society. Learn to swim
through the murky waters even when your arms are tired and at the end
of the day, you will be glad you did. A lot of people found themselves
in that exact position of being unemployed, living from hand to mouth,
but they grew out of it, not because they possessed extraordinary
qualities, but because they were persistent in their struggle for a
better life. In lieu of lamenting and complaining about the absence of
jobs, search yourself for the talents in you that could be harnessed
into a vocation, which will in turn fetch you all you want from a blue
collar job. Believe it or not, people are still making profits from
their abilities in this same country which most people view as dead,
everyone has got something to offer and you are no different.
The world has gotten to a point where
it appreciates talents in people regardless of what they do, as long as
they know their onions. Whatever your talents may be, there are always
people in need of your services. The other beautiful thing about letting
your talents work for you, is that, while dispensing your services, it
does not feel like a chore and you are hardly bored, it does not become
monotonous because you do what you love and you love what you do.
The other aspect of beating
mediocrity, is taking part in multi-level marketing businesses, there
are a lot of them now established and thriving in the country. You can
engage in network marketing alongside your vocation. Network marketing
entails exposure of whatever product or service the company is involved
in, to as many people as possible, while you are paid a certain
commission based on the number of people exposed to such product or
service through you. Although many people shy away from these
opportunities, this quote by Robert Kiyosaki, should be put into
consideration;
“The richest people in the world look for and build networks , while everyone else looks for work”.
Set yourself up for success, start
small, be persistent, do away with bitterness and resentment towards the
government and watch yourself grow daily into someone better than what
you were yesterday.
