Nigeriens top illegal aliens in Nigeria –Immigration
Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service says the largest number of illegal immigrants in Nigeria are from Niger Republic.
This was revealed just as the service deported eight Filipinos working in a multinational company without a valid visa.
The PUNCH had reported that since the arrest of a Chadian on the grounds of terrorism in Ijora area of Lagos, security agencies in the state have increased the clampdown on illegal immigrants.
The spokesman for the command, Muyiwa Odunubi, told our correspondent during a telephone interview on Wednesday that over 600 Nigeriens had been deported in the past two months, making Niger the country with the highest number of illegal immigrants.
He said, “Most of the illegal aliens we have deported in the past two months are from Niger and it would not be unsafe to assume now that they have the highest number of illegal aliens in Lagos and in Nigeria.
“In fact, in two weeks, over 234 Nigeriens have been deported out of the country.”
The service said it had deported over 53 illegal immigrants in the last four days.
He said they comprised 47 Nigeriens, eight Filipinos, a Sierre-leonan, a Beninoise, and a Togolese
Odunnubi added that the command was also set to deport 135 Nigeriens this week.
He said, “Eight Filipinos, who came into the country with a business visa but overstayed have been deported. Also, 47 illegal Nigeriens who confessed to have come into the country through illegal routes have been deported while seven Malians have been transferred to the Refugee Commission.
“There are 135 Nigeriens in our custody that are currently undergoing screening and those who are identified as illegal will deport this week as well.”
