The independent corrupt practices and other related offences commission (ICPC) yesterday arraigned Professor David Iornem over an alleged operation of an illegal university and allegedly obtaining the sum of $17,350 for the purposes of awarding an academic doctorate degree and admission to some persons. Iornem was arraigned on a three-count criminal charge before Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed of a Federal High Court, Abuja, which the ICPC claimed contravened Section 1(1) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related offences Act, 2006. When the charges were read to him, he pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail to the sum of N100,000 only with one surety in the like sum.
The trial court also adjourned till September 19, 2013 for trial to commence. Ruling on the bail application, Justice Mohammed held that, “having not opposed the bail application by the prosecution, I hereby admit the accused person to bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in the like sum, who must be a civil servant with the federal government ministry or any of its agencies. The surety must not be less than grade level 8. The accused person must produce his recent passport photograph”.
The court however, ordered that the accused person be remanded in Kuje prisons pending when he will perfect bail.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the accused person perfected his bail conditions and left the court premises with his lawyers.
