BlackBerry NOT Launching BBM for iOS, Android on June 27

Though word spread today that BlackBerry is planning to launch its BBM instant messaging service on iOS and Android June 27, a spokeswoman for the company said that date is "completely inaccurate."
"While there have been reports that BBM will be available to iOS and Android on June 27th, this is not accurate," BlackBerry said in a statement to PCMag on Thursday. "We will communicate an update as soon as we have an availability date to share."
BlackBerry on May 14 announced it would make BBM available to iOS and Android users at some point this summer, subject to approval by the Apple App Store and Google Play, but did not provide an exact date.
This week, however, a tweet from T-Mobile's U.K. account said: "Great news - BlackBerry Messenger will be available to download on iOS and Android from June 27th!"

The tweet, which has since been deleted, even included an image of BBM running on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. The news was quickly picked up by the tech blogosphere, but BlackBerry today shot it down.
Meanwhile, when it eventually launches, BBM for iOS and Android will start with messaging and groups features, and will gain voice calling, screen sharing, and video calling later this year, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said at the BlackBerry Live conference in Orlando last month. It will be available for devices running iOS 6 and Android 4.0 or higher.
Because it's a BlackBerry exclusive, BBM has only 60 million active users at this point. It's dwarfed by Android/iOS competitors like WhatsApp and Viber, which measure their user bases in the hundreds of millions. But BBM users are highly engaged, sending and receiving more than 10 billion messages per day, Heins said.
