70 couples wedded at the Church of Assumption Catholic Church, Abuja

It was a joyful celebration, as friends and well-wishers thronged en-masse yesterday to witness the holy solemnization of over 70 couples at the Church of Assumption Catholic Church, Abuja, a ceremony which the church described as “Mass Wedding”.

The couples, who were drawn from Church of Assumption Parish, Asokoro; SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Nyanya, and Zuba, all in the Federal Capital Territory, participated in weeks of marriage training before they were finally joined in the church.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, who was present to cheer the new couples, congratulated them for having waited patiently to be joined in accordance with the dictates of the Catholic Church.

“I congratulate the brides and their grooms for waiting patiently till this glorious day. Most of you that stopped receiving Holy Communion because you were not rightfully joined in accordance with dictates of Catholic Church, are now free to do so.’’
While appreciating the efforts of the host church for conducting the exercise, he advised the couples to live a righteous life by cherishing each other, even as he called on the Holy Spirit to guide their families.

According to him, “I thank God that those who were not willing to participate in the mass wedding later made up their mind and came to receive the blessings. But I pray that Jesus Christ and Mother Mary will guide their homes.”
After the couples exchanged their marital vows, they offered special thanksgiving to God and signed their marriage registers accordingly.
How far do you think this can reduce the population of singles in the church today?
