Visa Lottery Winner, Other Arrested Over Scam Marriage

Two persons, Adetokunbo Adejayan and Juliet Adebisi, have been arrested by the police Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi, Lagos, for pretending to be married in order to secure a United States visa.

The crime was said to have been brought to the notice of the SFU through a petition by the Assistant Regional Security Officer, United States Consulate General.

Police investigations revealed that Adejayan and Adebisi were not husband and wife as claimed.

It was discovered that the false union was arranged by one Segun and his syndicate, which specialise in teaming up US visa lottery winners with non-winners for onward “smuggling” to the US.

A statement by the SFU Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Isintume-Agu, said, “Their method is to merge a visa lottery winner with a non-winner and package both to US.

“In this case, the sum of N1.5m was paid by Adebisi and she was purportedly joined in matrimony with Adejayan, who genuinely won an American Visa lottery. Both suspects have made confessional statements that they are not legally married.”

Adeyanju, 35, who teaches in a secondary school in Mafoluku, Oshodi, was said to have won the lottery in May 2012.

His statement to the Police read in part, “It was my brother’s friend who played the lottery for me and he was the same person who called to tell me that I had won. He advised me to get a ‘wife’ before coming to the US. He then introduced me to Segun, assuring me that he (Segun) would help.

“It was Segun that brought Adebisi for the arranged marriage and subsequent interview and visa.”

Adebisi paid N1m to Segun in June 2012 to process her visa and another N500,000 for passports, medicals and training.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of SFU, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, said, “It was Segun who booked the appointment for the suspects at the embassy as husband and wife. The fake marriage was arranged last year.

“Investigation is ongoing and effort is on top gear to arrest Segun and his cohorts. The arrested suspects will be charged to court soon.”

31 Migrants Drowned Off Libyan Coast, Nigerians Among Survivors

Thirty-one migrants, including nine women, drowned off the coast of Libya during an attempted crossing to Italy according to survivors who managed to complete the journey, Italian media reported Sunday.

A dinghy carrying 53 migrants capsized on Friday evening, and witnesses said 31 of those who had been thrown off it drowned in the accident.

The twenty-two survivors, who come from Nigeria, Gambia, Benin and Senegal, said the dinghy had capsized after three days at sea. They were rescued by a passing merchant ship and taken to Lampedusa island, the reports said.

As the number of boat immigrants attempting the crossing soars in the good weather, rescuers saved another 450 people trying to reach Italy on Friday and Saturday, increasing tensions at the already crowded refugee centre on the island.

Another 92 migrants — including 16 women — were rescued Sunday morning in the Strait of Sicily after their boat got into difficulty.

Since 1999, more than 200,000 people have arrived on Lampedusa — which is closer to North Africa than Italy — making it, along with the Greece-Turkey border, one of the biggest gateways for undocumented migrants and refugees into the European Union.

In nearby Malta, 112 migrants were saved from their drifting dinghy overnight Saturday in a 13-hour operation during which eight of those rescued were airlifted to hospital by helicopter for urgent medical attention.

That group — which included 20 women and four children — was suffering from exhaustion, dehydration and sun stroke, a Maltese army spokesman told AFP.

The latest arrivals bring the number of migrants to land on Malta in July to 880 — an all-time record for a month — while 1,200 people in total have landed on the island so far this year. — AFP

Lagos Dumps Beggars, Homeless In Onitsha

AFTER 67 citizens were last week allegedly deported from Lagos and deposited at the Upper Iweka Bridge, Onitsha, Anambra State, the Lagos State government has defended the practice of expelling beggars and destitute rescued from the streets back to their states of origin.

In a chat with The Guardian, the Special Adviser to the Lagos Stats Governor on Youths and Social Development, Dr. Enitan Dolapo Badru, said at least, 1,708 beggars and destitute had been expelled from Lagos to their various states and countries since January, in Government’s bid to rid the streets of beggars and the mentally-challenged.

Badru noted that normal international standard requires the state to reunite them with their families. "The end result is to reunite them back with their families. We are not repatriating them out of Lagos, we are reuniting them with their families because once we rescue them, we cannot as a government, hold a child under the age of 18 in custody without parental or guardian’s consent. We found out that a lot of children on the streets of Lagos come from outside the state thinking that Lagos is an Eldorado. It is unfortunate that many of them are underage and very vulnerable because they can be introduced to so many vices.

The Pope's position on gay people appears to contrast with that of his predecessors.

Pope Francis has said gay people should not be judged or marginalized.
Speaking to reporters on a flight back from Brazil, he said: "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?"
The Pope's remarks are being seen as much more conciliatory than his predecessor's position on the issue. Turning to the issue of women priests, he said the Church had spoken and had said"no", but the role of women should not be restricted.
"We cannot limit the role of women in the Church to altar girls or the president of a charity, there must be more," he said in a wide-ranging interview with Vatican journalists.
Five months after he took over from Pope Benedict, he said gay people should be fully accepted in society.
""The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well," Pope Francis said.
"It says they should not be marginalize because of this but that they must be integrated into society." But he condemned what he described as lobbying by gay people.
"The problem is not having this orientation," he said. "We must be brothers. The problem is lobbying by this orientation, or lobbies of greedy people, political lobbies, Masonic lobbies, so many lobbies. This is the worse problem."

World's Largest Building Opens In China

You will agree with me, doing business with Chinesse government is not a bad idea.I'm looking forward to see this structure too in Nigeria hence MOU  had just been signed fo Nigeria to solidify her partnership with  the Chinesse.Move aside Dubai. China now has what is billed as the world's largest building — a vast, wavy rectangular box of glass and steel that will house shops, hotels, offices and a faux ocean beach with a huge LED screen for video sunsets. The mammoth New Century Global Center that opened last month in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu has 1.7 million square meters (19 million square feet) of floor space — or about 329 football fields — edging out the previous record-holder, the Dubai airport. The structure is half a kilometer long, 400 meters wide and 100 meters high. The New Century project is a sign that China's growth has spread from the country's more prosperous eastern and southern regions to the west, where wages are lower and the central government has encouraged development with subsidies and tax breaks. With its booming economy, China has become home to some of the largest and tallest buildings in the world.Backed by local governments, the building in a planned

U.S. President Barack Obama pledged $7 billion Sunday to help combat frequent power blackouts in sub-Saharan Africa.

(CNN) -- U.S. President Barack Obama pledged $7 billion Sunday to help combat frequent power blackouts in sub-Saharan Africa.
Funds from the initiative, dubbed Power Africa, will be distributed over the next five years. Obama made the announcement during his trip to South Africa, the continent's biggest economy.
"Access to electricity is fundamental to opportunity in this age. It's the light that children study by, the energy that allows an idea to be transformed into a real business. It's the lifeline for families to meet their most basic needs, and it's the connection that's needed to plug Africa into the grid of the global economy," he said.
Two-thirds of the population of sub-Saharan Africa lacks access to electricity, including more than 85% of those living in rural areas, the White House said.
"A light where currently there is darkness -- the energy to lift people out of poverty -- that's what opportunity looks like," Obama told students at Cape Town University. "So this is America's vision: a partnership with Africa for growth, and the potential for every citizen, not just a few at the top."
