Two people killed in crane accident at Brazil stadium due to host World Cup opening match

I am reporting on Brazil World cup because of some fans who would love to travel down to watch all the matches. You just have to get prepared as dailymail reported again that: Two people are believed to have been killed after a crane collapsed at the Brazilian football stadium due to host the opening match at next year's World Cup.

The final part of the structure, which was due to be one of the centerpieces of the 2014 tournament,  was being installed at the Corinthians stadium when the 500-ton crane cut through the roof of the east side stand, causing extensive damage.

One of the dead workers, 42-year-old Fabio Luis Pereira, was inside a truck when it was hit by the falling metal structure.

The other, 44-year-old Ronaldo Oliveira dos Santos, was said to be 'napping' during a break in an area that was supposed to have been cleared.

The accident happened at lunchtime, so few of the nearly 1,700 workers were on the site when the crane collapsed.

A stonemason who was off at a cafeteria said it was lucky the accident happened when it did.
Evadro Pereira, 32, said: 'If it hadn't been lunchtime there would have been many more deaths. It was really very scary.'

Already, public prosecutors and a workers union in Sao Paulo were demanding an investigation into conditions at the venue, saying work shouldn't resume until authorities deem the stadium safe.

None of the employees will be returning to the site for the next three days during a mourning period.

England fans travelling to World Cup in Brazil warned to protect themselves against terrifying holiday bug which can kill

Come to think of it,it won't be a bad idea to stay at home with few bottles of wine around you watching all the matches through your home television rather than to spend huge amount of dollars and come back effected. Dear readers,if you insist you must travel to Brazil then this is what dailymail has for you:
England fans travelling to next summer's World Cup in Brazil have been warned to protect themselves against a terrifying holiday bug which can kill.

Organisers FIFA and their sponsors are being urged to spell out the risks of mosquito-borne dengue fever after a study showed cases could peak in three of the twelve host cities.

It usually produces flu-like symptoms but severe forms cause internal bleeding - claiming 20,000 lives every year.

Dengue is endemic in over 100 countries with 100 million people struck down annually.

Professor Simon Hay, an infectious diseases expert, has called on the Brazilian authorities to take action to reduce the number of mosquitoes before over half a million people flock in from across the globe.

He said: 'Dengue fever could be a significant problem in some of the tournament locations and preventative measures are needed.

'FIFA, the Brazilian authorities and the World Cup sponsors must use their influence and experience to communicate the risk.

Although it cannot be passed from human to human a non-infected insect that bites someone with dengue then becomes a carrier - passing the disease to the next person it targets.

It's transmitted by urban, day-biting Aedes mosquitoes which makes it a particular problem in towns and cities.

Infected visitors can also inadvertently bring home the disease to their native country.

Professor Hay and colleagues explored the risk to football fans by examining maps of the distribution of dengue in Brazil and records of its seasonal variation at key sites.
DENGUE: BREAKBONE FEVER

Dengue is a viral infection that can cause a range of symptoms, from mild flu-like illness to more serious illnesses including rashes and bone pain.

Severe and potentially deadly forms develop in around 5 percent of patients.

Dengue usually clears up by itself within around 1-2 weeks.

There are no specific medications to treat the disease, but symptoms can be managed by taking paracetamol, drinking plenty of fluids and resting.

The study published in Nature showed outbreaks will be highest when matches are played in Fortaleza, Natal and Salvador - all in the north east of the country.

England will find out where they will initially be based when the draw for the group stages takes place on 6 December.

Professor Hay, of Oxford University, said: 'I don't want to dissuade anyone from going to the World Cup - nor to single out Brazil - which is one of more than 100 countries battling dengue worldwide.

'My aim is to inform unwary spectators about the risk and how they can protect themselves.'

Despite being a tropical disease cases have been reported in France and Croatia.

After it struck the island of Madeira last year the World Health Organisation warned of a future European outbreak.

There is no vaccine so people heading out next summer should pack plenty of light-coloured long trousers and long-sleeved shirts along with mosquito-repellant sprays for exposed areas of skin.

Professor Hay said: 'The Brazilian authorities should implement aggressive vector control in April and May - particularly around the northern stadiums - to decrease the number of dengue-transmitting mosquitoes.

'They can target adult Aedes mosquitoes through fogging - the use of aerosol formulations of insecticides that disperse efficiently - and can interrupt breeding by clearing sites at which the mosquitoes lay their eggs - water collected in discarded rubbish for example.

'There are no vaccines or drugs against dengue but an individual will never contract dengue if they do not get bitten by an infected mosquito in the first place. So avoiding mosquito bites is the best precaution.

'Select accomodation with screened windows and doors and air conditioning; use insecticides indoors; wear clothing that covers the arms and legs especially during early morning and late afternoon when the chance of being bitten is greatest; and apply insect repellant to clothing and exposed skin.'

England fans have already snapped up more than 28,000 match tickets for Brazil - even before they know where the team will be playing.

So keen are they to witness glory in June and July they are only behind the host country themselves, the US and Germany in the global rush - despite basic travel packages costing a whopping £7,000.

Girl, 12, commits suicide in Ebonyi State, Nigeria

A 12-year-old girl, Miss Chisom Okechukwu, has committed suicide, hanging herself at her family compound at Nnoche-Uduke Community in Okpoitumo in the Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Okechukwu, a primary five pupil at Nnoche-Uduke Primary School, was said to have left home on Saturday and was not seen until Sunday morning, hanging on a tree at the back of her compound.

Her dangling body was discovered by her younger sister, Ndidi, who was going to the toilet dug at the back of the compound.

An eye-wtness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that Ndidi raised an alarm which attracted their parents and other members of the community who came and brought her down.

“The whole scenario brought tension and confusion in the community as people were seen in clusters discussing the death.

“People, especially some members of Okechukwu’s family are of the opinion that she did not commit suicide and insisted on a thorough investigation to unravel the true cause of her death,’’ said the witness.

He claimed that a neighbour to the Okechukwu family had reported to the girl’s parents that she stole her egg which made them to beat her.

“After the incident, Okechukwu went inside their house, changed into her new cloth and left the house only to be seen dangling lifeless on a tree on Sunday,’’ he said.

An elder in the community, Mr Friday Itumo, told NAN that the incident had brought confusion to the community as such a tragedy had never been experienced before in the community.

“Mr Okechukwu is not the girl’s biological father as her mother came in with her when she re-married Mr Okechukwu after her former husband’s death.

“Her former husband’s family members are now insisting that Mr Okechukwu should provide their daughter alive and this has compounded the problem,” he said.

Hundreds of sympathisers were seen trooping in and out of the compound, including her school mates who were visibly shocked by her sudden death.

The Ebonyi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Chris Anyanwu, confirmed the incident, saying that the matter was reported to the Police Division in Ikwo.

“We have commenced investigation into the girl’s death to ascertain why she should engage in such act.

“We can’t confirm that she committed suicide because one can be killed and hanged by his or her killer, to claim that the person committed suicide.

“We assure her family, members of the community and the whole state that we would get to the root of this matter,’’ he said.

The girl’s body has been deposited at the Onueke General Hospital Mortuary in the Ezza South Local Government Area for autopsy.

Samsung ordered to pay Apple $290 million for copying iPhone and iPad features

Technology:A Silicon Valley jury on Thursday ordered Samsung Electronics to pay Apple $290 million for copying vital iPhone and iPad features.

The verdict covers 13 older Samsung devices that a previous jury found were among 26 Samsung products that infringed Apple patents.

The previous jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion. But U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ordered the new trial and tossed out $450 million of the damages after concluding the previous jury miscalculated the amount Samsung owed.

Samsung appealed that verdict and is expected to appeal the latest verdict.

A third trial is scheduled for March to consider Apple's claims that Samsung's newest devices on the market also copied Apple's technology.

Apple and Samsung are the world's two biggest smartphone makers. The bitter rivals have been waging a global battle for supremacy of the $300 billion worldwide market.

Apple has argued in courts, government tribunals and regulatory agencies around the world that Samsung's Android-based phones copy vital iPhone features. Samsung is fighting back with its own complaints that some key Apple patents are invalid and Apple has copied Samsung's technology.

women rescued from decades of slavery

Daily mail reported that:Three women allegedly held as slaves - one for more than 30 years - have been 'rescued' from a house in south London, Scotland Yard has revealed today.

Two suspects, a man and woman both aged 67 described as 'heads of the family', have been arrested in the capital.

Inside their 'ordinary house on an ordinary street' three women - a 69-year-old Malaysian woman, a 57-year-old Irish woman and a 30-year-old British woman - were rescued.

Scotland Yard said they made the discovery after a charity received a 'call for help' from one of the alleged captives last month.
She told them she had been held against her will for more than three decades.
Freedom Charity, which aims to advise and support victims of forced marriages or honour-based violence, then told police about the call received following a television documentary on forced marriages.
Aneeta Prem, Freedom Charity founder, said the alleged victims - who are believed to have suffered physical and mental harm - were able to walk out of the property after extensive calls with the charity.
'We started in-depth to talks to them when they could, it had to be pre-arranged. They gave us set times when they were able to speak to us,' she told Sky News.

'It was planned that they would be able to walk out of the property. The police were on standby.

Ms Prem said the two people arrested were considered the 'heads of the family', and that the women were 'absolutely terrified' of them.

She added: 'They felt they were in massive danger.

'I don't believe the neighbours knew anything about it at all. It was just an ordinary house in an ordinary street.

‘They did have rooms that they could use but they were really restricted about what they could do and could never leave the front door.

‘They are together in a place of safety and are doing very well despite what has happened to them.

‘When we had found out that they came out of that house there were huge cheers here that they were safe. We hope they can have happy lives.

‘It is absolutely unbelievable that people can ever find themselves in this position. It is an amazing story.

Asked about what help the women will be given, the charity founder said: 'They are going to be afforded all the help and support that can be.

'I'm so grateful they saw the news.

'Now they will try to re-build their lives.'

All three, who police described as 'highly traumatised', are together in a secret location.

Detective Inspector Kevin Hyland, from the Met's human trafficking unit, said: 'We applaud the actions of Freedom Charity and are working in partnership to support these victims who appear to have been held for over 30 years.

'We have launched an extensive investigation to establish the facts surrounding these very serious allegations.

Man stabbed to death in Chelsea city

A man with a long rap sheet was slain in Chelsea, police sources said.

The 28-year-old Brooklyn victim was found stabbed in the stomach shortly before 2 a.m. in front of Erotica on 8th Avenue and 26th Street, cops said.

He died shortly after at Bellevue Hospital. It was not immediately clear what sparked the killing, but the victim had been arrested 71 times by the NYPD, according to sources.

Police said there is no indication that this was a bias attack, despite a recent spate of violence against gay men.

His busts included assault, robbery, pot possession, and obstructing governmental administration, sources said. He was most recently arrested on May 10 for attempted fraud.

His name was withheld pending family notification, but he is a resident of East New York.

Pope embraced another victim of terrible disease

Two weeks after the Pope moved the world when he embraced victim of terrible disease, his compassion brings a moment of joy to another disfigured man

You might not agree with me but I would say this:The has actually brought transformation to Catholic mission by giving hope to the hopeless and comfort to the deprived.
His actions have touched many across the world and revitalised the Catholic church

But for Pope Francis, comforting this stricken man after today's weekly audience in St Peter's Square was another simple act of compassion.

In scenes strikingly similar to his encounter with the disfigured Vinicio Riva two weeks before, the pontiff first spoke with the worshipper and then put his arms around him, blessing him.

The man's identity is not known, nor are the details of what caused such terrible damage to his face.

However, his delight at spending a few moments in the presence of the leader of the Catholic church can be imagined.

£148million Lottery-winning husband confirms his marriage is over but denies rumours of wife's affair

I never believed lottery of this type still exist, but thanks to dailymail that revealed the post. here is what the winner got to say: We're all happy now and life goes on': £148million Lottery-winning husband confirms his marriage is over but denies rumours of wife's affair

The couple who won £148million in the lottery a year ago say they are 'happy now' after it was revealed they are on the verge of divorce and living in separate mansions.

Adrian Bayford, 43, and his wife Gillian, 41, said they hoped the EuroMillions win would bring their family together but instead they have separated and will split their fortune after their relationship broke down 'irretrievably'.

Mr Bayford has admitted they had not been getting on for some time but denied an affair was behind their break-up, and said they are 'getting along fine'.

Mrs Bayford is living in the £6million Georgian home they swapped for their modest three-bedroom house, and Mr Bayford is in a £500,000 property ten minutes down the road in Suffolk.

Look, me and Gillian are getting along fine, ' he said.

Casual workers more likely to put off starting a family

I got this piece from dailymail.co.uk which of course, I would like to share among my dear readers. I don't know how you would feel sequel to this findings that says Childless at 35? Your job may be to blame: Casual workers more likely to put off starting a family

For any woman who dreams of starting a family, finding the right job could be just as important as finding the right man.

The longer a woman spends in temporary employment, the more likely she is to be childless aged 35, according to a study.
So a steady job could actually improve her chances of motherhood rather than encourage her  to delay it.

And the researchers said the finding held true irrespective of the woman’s social background.

Just over two-thirds of women have at least one child by their mid-30s. But the likelihood of becoming a mother by 35 was 8 per cent lower for those who had done one year of casual work, the Australian study found.

Battle against corruption failing across Africa, survey finds

A survey of 51,000 Africans in 34 countries found that nearly 1 in 3 had paid a bribe within the previous year to obtain a government document, get medical care or settle a problem with police, the Afrobarometer polling group reported Wednesday.

Results of the 20-month study made clear that despite many African governments proclaiming the fight against corruption to be a top priority, a majority of those questioned said their leaders were doing a bad job of it.

Police came in for the lowest ratings by the citizens they are supposed to protect, with 43% of respondents across the continent saying that most or all of their their law enforcement officers were corrupt. In Nigeria, distrust of police was cited by 78% of those surveyed, and the distrust in Kenya and Sierra Leone, at 69% for each, was the second-most pronounced among the respondents.

Sierra Leoneans also reported the highest rate of bribe-paying, with 63% telling Afrobarometer interviewers that at least once in the previous year they had to pay government officials to obtain a permit, license or customs document.

And the poorer the country, the more vulnerable are its citizens to authorities with their hands out, the survey found. Of those who reported having gone without food at times in the year prior to being questioned, 18% said they had had to find money to pay off an official obliged to provide them with a document or service. Among those who said they hadn't gone hungry, 12% said they had paid a bribe at least once the previous year.

Governments have pledged to root out corruption, but their perceived failure to do so poses daunting risks for countries emerging from poverty or colonial rule because it contributes to dissatisfaction with democracy, say the authors of "Governments Falter in Fight to Curb Corruption: The People Give Most a Failing Grade."

While there were some improvements noted -- in Botswana and Malawi, for example -- the overall trend in Africans' views of their leaders was negative, the study found, with 54% of respondents rating their governments as corrupt, up 8 percentage points from the 46% recorded a decade ago.

Furious father who complained to Tesco that £470 iPad was actually a box filled with clay was ARRESTED - before being cleared

Report from daily mail reported a businessman sold a lump of clay instead of an iPad by Tesco was arrested on suspicion of fraud when he complained to the supermarket giant.

Colin Marsh, 47, paid £470 for the Apple tablet computer in Whitstable, Kent, as a Christmas present last year for his young daughters - but he opened the box to find it contained three lumps of clay.

The father, who runs two bakeries, immediately took it back to the store for a refund - but instead of reimbursing him, Tesco staff became suspicious and reported him to Kent Police.

The father, who runs two bakeries, immediately took it back to the store for a refund - but instead of reimbursing him, Tesco staff became suspicious and reported him to Kent Police.

Mr Marsh, who has since got his money back, said: ‘You just can’t treat people like that. It’s absolutely disgusting. I couldn’t believe it when I saw what was inside the box.

'Maddie was devastated. I took it back to Tesco, but they said they couldn’t give me a refund and would need to carry out an investigation.

Three lumps of clay: Tesco staff became suspicious and reported Mr Marsh to Kent Police

‘Two days later, I got a call at about 8pm from the police asking if I could come down to the station to answer some questions. I just thought they wanted to know what had happened.

‘But the next thing I know I’m being bundled into a cell. I was in there for three hours. It was then they told me the iPad had been activated in my name. I just thought “how can that possibly be?”

‘It didn’t make any sense. I’ve run my own successful businesses for 22 years, and I own my own house. Why would I want to scam Tesco out of a £470 iPad? I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through what my family and I have.’

Mr Marsh, who is married to hairdresser Sam, 45, bought the iPad just before Christmas last year. He went back to complain on Boxing Day but was told staff needed to ‘investigate’.

Police then called him and he voluntarily attended Whitstable police station on December 28 where officers claimed the iPad had been registered to him.

Mr Marsh remained on bail until February 14 when the missing tablet was found registered in Wales.

A Tesco spokesman said: ‘We were very disappointed to learn that the product we sold to Mr Marsh had been tampered with.

'We would of course never knowingly have sold it to Mr Marsh and we apologise sincerely for the problems this has caused him.

We immediately launched an internal investigation into how this happened and shared the information we gathered with the police, which we believe was the right thing to do.

'You just can’t treat people like that. It’s absolutely disgusting'

Colin Marsh

‘The police investigation and the actions they took are a matter for the police.’

A Kent Police spokesman said: ‘Mr Marsh was arrested on suspicion of fraud following information that the iPad in question had apparently been registered in his name at some time between 21 and 24 December 2012.

‘This was investigated and as soon as it became clear that Mr Marsh had not committed any offences, his bail was cancelled and he was informed police would not be taking any further action against him.’

uganda champ who lost his during arsenal and man utd

A staunch Arsenal fan in Iganga District in Eastern Uganda is searching for a new home for his family after losing his house in a bet over a game between English clubs Arsenal and Manchester United.
Before the two heavyweights faced off on Sunday n the league, Henry Dhabasani staked his two-roomed house in a bet with a one Rashid Yiga that Arsenal would win the game, the Observer – a Ugandan newspaper reports.
On his part, Yiga staked his new Toyota Premio car and his wife that Manchester United would win.
“The two put their stake in writing, with local leaders and fans witnessing the deed,” the paper further reports.
Dhabasani, married to three wives with five children, fainted at the end of the match on realizing Arsenal had lost the game 1–0.
On Monday, several Manchester United fans stormed Dhabasani’s home and threw him and his family out.

We were the better team and lost the game' says Wenger. What's the difference? if your club was actually better why didn't they win the game? Now, a fan who stupidly lost his house and placed his entire family in frustration will not in his next generation support Arsenal except other fans come to his aid. Football is a game which shouldn't be taken for granted.
On bad luck during the match…
"I think what is the most difficult to take is that we were the better team and we lost the game. We were in front and had a chance to score the second goal and got punished on two goals. It is beyond belief.
"So overall I would like to keep the positives of this game because I believe that we can deal well with the disappointment of losing the game today. We have a great future and we can be a real force. But of course, it’s difficult to sort out tonight and we go home without any points."
On being sent off at the end of the match…
“I kicked the bottle of water when the goal was cancelled from disappointment and the fourth official called the referee and sent me off. Frankly, I don’t know what to say. Thirty seconds to go. It was really spectacular. I didn’t even know where to go. He told me to go into the stands, but there was no way to get into the stands. Just because I kicked a bottle of water, I didn’t say a word to anybody. And it was quite a good kick."
On Robin van Persie’s cancelled goal…
"I didn’t kick the bottle because Gallas was not offside, but because I was disappointed. I thought we had equalised."
On missing out on a penalty in the first half…
"Maybe I’m not the most objective, but for me I believe it was a penalty in the first half.
On the differences between Rooney’s and Eduardo’s penalties…
"It will be a big difference tomorrow in the newspapers. I don’t know…I have not seen it, I do not want especially to see it. He kicked the ball to the corner flag, Rooney, and after  - was he touched or not, was it a penalty or not – leave these decisions to the referee."
On the frustration of not getting any points from the match…"Football is unpredictable. I believe in this team we lack some calmness, maturity and experience when we were in moments where we were not under panic at all. We assessed wrongly two situations. The first one, Rooney was no danger to score, there was no need to panic. And on the second one as well. There was not one player of Man United around our players. So it’s lack of communication and still little bit I feel in these situations that we might be lacking a little bit of experience."
On the missed opportunities at 1-0…"We couldn’t finish the game off. You play at Old Trafford you get 1-1 of course. And any mistake and then you’re down. We had the chances to kill this game and even to come back to 2-2."

Horrifying story of how girls as young as NINE are forced to sell themselves for just £8 a time

The child sex slaves of Brazil's Highway From Hell: Horrifying story of how girls as young as NINE are forced to sell themselves for just £8 a time

Underage girls are sold for sex every ten miles along the BR-116
Young girls prostitute themselves every night for just £8
The law turns a blind eye to the crimes and perpetrators are unpunished
Matt Roper, a British journalist, investigated the extent of the abuse
His charity Meninadança has set up a safe haven for 60 young girls
UNICEF estimates there are 250,000 children in prostitution across Brazil

Loitering by the side of the dusty motorway in a skimpy lilac dress which hung loose from her birdlike body, the girl looked lost and painfully alone in the dark Brazilian night.

It was 1.30am and there was no obvious explanation why she should be on a nightmarish stretch of road rather than asleep in her own bed.

But the deeply disturbing truth was this. At the age of 11, Leliah, with her childlike and fragile limbs, was selling herself for sex to any truck driver prepared to pay.

When he’s finished he throws me out of the cab’, she said, showing her battered and bruised elbows. ‘Sometimes they let me climb down, or sometimes they just kick me out onto the concrete.

‘But I never sell myself short. I charge 25 reals (£10) a time’.

For British journalist Matt Roper, this chance meeting with Leliah was to change his life. He drove off along the BR-116 motorway, a merciless 2,700-mile stretch of road spearing up the coast of Brazil from Rio de Janerio to Fortaleza, in a state of profound shock.

Later he decided to investigate and write about the forgotten children who eke out a living on the Highway to Hell.

And despite being a hardened news reporter, nothing had prepared him for the scale of depravity he was to uncover.

Leliah was just one of thousands of girls – some as young as nine - sold for sex every ten miles along the BR-116. Many are prostituted by their own families. The cheapest fee for a transaction is £8.

Virus: Russian cosmonaut accidentally infected the International Space Station with a USB stick

It’s the last place you want to be if a computer virus is attacking your systems.

The International Space Station (ISS), orbiting 220 miles above Earth, is scary enough without cyber attacks damaging the computers.

But that’s exactly what the ISS team were faced with when a Russian cosmonaut accidently infected the spacecraft’s computer systems with an unspecified virus earlier this year.

The space guys from time-to-time are coming with USBs, which are infected,’ Russian security expert Eugene Kaspersky told reporters at the National Press Club event in Canberra, Australia.

I'm not kidding. I was talking to Russian space guys and they said, “yeah, from time-to-time there are viruses on the space station”,’ Mr Kaspersky said.

The ISS’ control systems used to operate on Windows XP before moving over to Linux.

This mean that astronauts who used Windows programs on Earth could have brought a virus onto the ISS via a USB stick.

Mr Kaspersky did not provide details on how badly the virus affected ISS operations or how the problem was dealt with by the engineering crew.

According to a report on ExtremeTech, in 2008 a Windows XP laptop was brought onto the ISS by a Russian astronaut infected with the W32.Gammima.AG worm.

This rapidly spread to other laptops on the spacecraft which were running Windows XP.

Mr Kaspersky said this highlights the threat of cyber attacks even when a system isn't connected to the internet.

Systems that are not connected the internet are normally considered secure as a hacker would require physical contact with the computer.

Mr Kaspersky noted another example of the infamous Stuxnet virus which attacked a nuclear power plant in Russia– also disconnected from the internet - and badly damaged their internal infrastructure.

The ’Stuxnet’ worm, discovered in June 2010, brought home the reality of the danger posed by cyber crime.

Named the world’s ’first cyber super weapon’, Stuxnet was thought to be designed for attacking equipment associated with Iran’s Bushehr power plant.

Mr Kaspersky warned of the repercussions for releasing viruses such as Stuxnet.

‘What goes around comes around,’ he said. ‘Everything you do will boomerang.’

EX ASUU PRESIDENT'S DEATH: OVER-SPEEDING BY GOVERNOR'S CONVOY DIDNT KILL HIM

A former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Festus Iyayi, is dead, union officials said.
Witnesses said Mr. Iyayi, 66, died along the the Lokoja-Abuja highway in an accident involving the the convoy of Kogi state Governor, Idris Wada.

The late university teacher was among ASUU leaders who met with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja last week to deliberate on how to end the four-month strike by lecturers.

Mr. Iyayi is believed to be travelling to Kano for Wednesday’s National Executive Committee meeting where a vote is likely to be taken on whether the ongoing strike should be called off.

One of the pilot cars in the governor’s convoy reportedly rammed into the vehicle in which Mr. Iyayi and other activists were travelling, killing him instantly, witnesses said.

But the Special Adviser to the Governor, Jacob Edi, said it was untrue that it was the governor’s pilot vehicle that hit Mr. Iyayi’s car.

“There was a collision on a narrow road and it is too early to say who rammed into who,” Mr. Edi told PREMIUM TIMES. ”The ASUU car was dodging a trailer and an accident occurred. It is not fair to politicise this incident.”

Mr. Edi said as soon as the accident happened, the governor directed that the ambulance in the convoy be used to convey the victims to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

Some of the victims, he said, were also taken to the Government House Clinic.

The Kogi governor’s spokesperson said the governor later visited the hospitals to sympathize with the victims of the accident.

He dismissed suggestions that the accident happened because of overspeeding by his boss’ convoy, saying Mr. Wada’s convoy travels at 80 km per hour.

This is the second time Mr. Wada’s convoy would be involved in deadly accident in less than a year.

On December 28, 2012, the governor’s motorcade was involved in a crash that the auto crash that broke Mr. Wada’s leg, killed his security aide and injured two other state officials.

Jealous 26st father fractured 4ft 10in ex-girlfriend's face in 20 places after he found out she was seeing another man

A jealous father who weighs 26 stone has been jailed after he battered his former girlfriend until she passed out.

Thomas Day, 39, left Helen Callaghan - who is 4ft10in and weighs just six stone - with horrific injuries after he punched and throttled her in a fit of jealousy after learning she was seeing another man, a court heard.

The couple's two children, aged ten and six, walked into the room moments after the attack to find their father, who is almost 6ft tall, standing over 28-year-old Miss Callaghan's body.
The children ran from the home and into the arms of concerned neighbours.

Miss Callaghan’s face was fractured in 20 places, including her cheeks, nose and eye sockets. Surgeons have implanted metal plates into her jaw and cheeks and are trying to reconstruct her face from photographs taken before the attack in June.
Police first arrested Day on suspicion of attempted murder, to which he said: 'If I wanted her dead, I would have killed her.'

The charge was later reduced to a serious assault.
Day pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm when he appeared earlier at Manchester Crown Court.

He also admitted a common assault on Miss Callaghan two weeks earlier and a charge of affray after he lost his temper in a pub where she worked.

Truly, some people don't deserve kids and ironically God overlooks their intentions and still provide for them. Can you imagine how a Chinese boy is fighting for his life after his mother forced him to drink petrol and then set him on fire.

Authorities said the four-year-old was abused then torched in a grotesque plot by his mother to get revenge on her husband who she felt was not treating her with the 'proper respect'.

The tragedy happened in the city of Jinhua in Zhejiang province in the east of China.

Neighbours said that the woman and her husband were frequently arguing about money.

The woman, 40-year-old Shen Dan, and the man, 48-year-old Zhang Qiusheng, were both divorced and had then married each other.

Before their marriage, Zhang lived with her daughter, Zhang Mengting, who is a college student now.

After they were married Zhang and Shen had their own son, a boy called Duoduo.

But the two were always rowing about money. At the start of this month the woman - after a particularly heated argument - had left the apartment to return with a can of petrol.

She had then tried to force her son to drink it but had only been partially successful as the boy had tried to fight once the first sip had gone into his mouth.

As his father tried to intervene, she dragged the boy towards the naked flame on the gas stove, spilling petrol over all three of them - and they then all caught fire.

Despite the burns, the father rushed with the boy into the living room where he wrapped his head in a blanket to extinguish the flames. The boy is now in intensive care.

Lionel Messi is out until 2014 due to torn muscle injury

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is set to be sidelined for up to two months with a hamstring injury he sustained during Sunday's match with Real Betis.

Messi limped off after 21 minutes of the 4-1 win after injuring his left hamstring and he underwent further tests on Monday to determine the extent of the problem.

After receiving the results of those tests, Barcelona said the Argentinian is likely to be absent for between 'six and eight weeks'.

A Barca statement read: 'According to the club's medical services, the tests taken on Monday morning by Leo Messi have confirmed that the player has suffered a torn muscle in the femoral biceps of his left leg.
'The approximate time he will be out is between six and eight weeks.
'The first part of his recovery will take place in Barcelona and the second, in Buenos Aires.'

The injury will rule Messi out of both of Argentina's upcoming friendlies against Ecuador and Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as up to eight matches for Barca.

If he is not available again before the end of the year, Messi would sit out four Primera Division matches, the Champions League clashes against Ajax and Celtic, and both legs of the Copa del Rey last-32 tie against Cartagena.

The good news for Barca is that they boast a three-point lead at the top of La Liga and are already through to the knockout stages in Europe.

The world player of the year, 26, has suffered from hamstring issues in the past, including twice already this season having also damaged the left one in the first leg of the Spanish Super Copa and then the right one at the end of September.

He was out of action for a week the first time and for three weeks the second.

His team-mate Cesc Fabregas, who experienced similar problems while at Arsenal, on Sunday night urged Messi not to try to rush his recovery.

'He needs to take as much time as he needs, to recover and get back to his level. We need him at his best,' he said.

'I had something similar at Arsenal. You think you're okay, but you're not.

'I had this injury, I wasn't right for up to a year and half, it's a really frustrating injury. You need to take whatever time you need because if you don't it won't heal properly,' the Spain international told Canal Plus.

Fabregas, who scored two second-half goals in the win over Betis, also picked up a knee injury in the victory and will be sidelined for seven days, Barca announced.

He will be replaced in the Spain squad for the friendlies against Equatorial Guinea and South Africa by his Barca team-mate Marc Bartra.

It is the first time the 22-year-old centre-back has been called up by the reigning world and European champions.

Messi, meanwhile, has been chosen by Franz Beckenbauer to captain a Galaxy XI against a team of aliens as part of an elaborate advertising campaign.

Over the past few weeks, Samsung have been whipping up publicity by sending mysterious men in black cloaks to Stamford Bridge, Juventus Stadium and the Allianz Arena as part of a Galaxy XI campaign.

As part of the advertisement, Beckenbauer claims that the Galaxy XI need to win a match against aliens that threaten to take over the planet.

Messi features in the new ad which sees him running through the streets of Barcelona with a football as a hoard of black cars begin to chase him.

Just as you think he’s going to get away, a car stops in front of him to reveal Beckenbauer holding his Galaxy XI captain’s armband.

Wish you a very fast recovery Messi.

Windows Phone makes up one in ten smartphone sales

From the desk of telegraph,Windows Phone makes up one in ten smartphone sales
Microsoft's Windows Phone, driven almost entirely by Nokia sales, continues to make rapid progress in Europe, research shows

Microsoft's Windows Phone now makes up one in 10 smartphone sales across the five major European markets, data shows.

It is overtaken Apple's iOS in Italy and is growing in emerging markets such as Latin America, according to industry research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

Windows Phone's success is driven almost entirely by Nokia sales in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
Android remains the dominant operating system across Europe with 71.9 per cent sales, an increase of 4.2 percentage points compared with the same period last year.
In Britain, Windows accounts for 11.4 per cent of the market while Android has 58.4 per cent.
BlackBerry now only has 3.1 per cent and Apple’s iOS has dipped by 1.0 percentage point to 27 per cent, although it is expected to strengthen at Christmas.
Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: “August is traditionally a quiet month for Apple as consumers wait for the release of new models, and strong sales of the iPhone 5S and 5C at the end of September did not manage to make up for the lull."

On Latin America he said: "Nokia dominated in Latin America for many years, and while its popularity declined with the fortunes of Symbian it now has an opportunity to regain the top-spot.

"The majority of consumers in Latin America still own a Nokia featurephone and upgrading to an entry level Lumia is a logical next step. Price is the main barrier in developing markets and the budget Lumia 520 opens the door to smartphone ownership for many.”

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech’s latest figures also show China is increasingly dominated by Android which accounts for 81.1 per cent of the market, up 14.6 percentage points from last year.

Domestic manufacturers made up 44 per cent of smartphone sales in the latest period, compared to just 30 per cent the previous year.

Huawei, Xiaomi, Lenovo and Coolpad handsets are particularly popular outside of China’s largest cities and represent a more value-for-money option than global brands.

Pope Francis halted to kiss and hold a disfigured man

For the very first time in my whole life I think I am seeing a man who not only believes in his religion but practices what he preaches. Well done sir, hats off to you.

Pope Francis concluded Wednesday's general audience in St Peter's Square in Rome by kissing a man covered in growths and joining him in prayer.

Photos of the pontiff embracing the severely disfigured man have gone viral online, with commenters praising the pope for his compassion and kindness.

In Italian press, the pope has drawn comparisons to his illustrious namesake, St Francis of Assisi - a revered 13th century holy figure, who according to legend kissed a leper he had encountered on a road after receiving a message from God.

Images of Pope Francis comforting the ailing worshiper were taken at the end of the general audience Wednesday, when a man covered in neuronal tumors approached the leader of the Catholic Church asking for a blessing.

The man reportedly suffers from a rare and painful disease called neurofibromatosis, which causes growths, impaired vision and in some cases cancer, according to the Catholic News Agency.
Patients suffering from the ailment, which is genetic and not contagious - are often shunned by society because of their appearance.

Pope Francis has been widely praised for his common touch and accessibility.

Since being elected to the Holy See earlier this year, the pontiff has made headlines around the world by washing the feet of juvenile delinquents, personally calling distraught worshipers on the phone and inviting homeless people to dine at St Peter's Square.

On Wednesday, the leader of the world’s 1.3billion Catholics was greeting pilgrims following his weekly public audience when he took a break to comfort the disfigured believer.

Pope Francis then kissed the man on the face and blessed him. He was photographed with his eyes tightly shut in prayer.

Earlier in today’s audience, the pope asked the people assembled in the square to pray for a sick little girl he had just met.

Last week, the pontiff allowed a little boy to remain on stage with him and cling to his leg during a speech in front of a crowd of 150,000.

Earlier this year, Francis tweeted to his 3.2million followers: ’The Pope must serve all people, especially the poor, the weak, the vulnerable.’

On Tuesday, the pontiff fired off this message: ‘We need courage if we are to be faithful to the Gospel.’
